What is an opposition in astrology?

An opposition forms when two planets sit almost exactly 180 degrees apart, half a full circle, landing on opposite sides of your chart and looking straight across at each other. Astrologers allow a little slack, an orb of roughly 6 to 8 degrees, so the angle doesn't have to be perfect to count. Because opposite points fall in opposite signs, an opposition usually links two signs that face each other across the zodiac: Aries and Libra, Cancer and Capricorn, Taurus and Scorpio.

You already know the feeling from the sky. Every full moon is an opposition, the Sun on one side and the Moon directly across from it, which is why full moons run so bright and a little exposing: two needs turned up at once, both lit and impossible to ignore. Squares and oppositions both count as hard aspects, the ones that generate friction, but they feel different from the inside. A square is 90 degrees and grinds internally, a private itch that pushes you to do something about it.
