What an aspect actually measures
Picture the zodiac as a circle of 360 degrees, with every planet parked at its own spot on the rim. An aspect is simply the distance between two of those spots. Two planets 90 degrees apart are in a square. Two planets 120 degrees apart are in a trine. The angle is the whole story, which is why the same pair of planets can feel completely different from one chart to the next.
The angle rarely lands on a perfect number, so astrologers allow an orb, a few degrees of give on either side. A square that is exact to the degree hits hard and obvious. A square that runs eight degrees wide is still there, just quieter. Tighter means louder.
The five major aspects
Five aspects do most of the talking. Two of them feel easy, two feel like work, and one just turns up the volume on whatever it touches.

Soft aspects, hard aspects, and why you want both
Astrologers sort these into soft and hard. Sextiles and trines are soft: they flow, they feel good, they hand you things. Squares and oppositions are hard: they create tension you have to do something with. The conjunction plays for either side depending on which planets are involved.
Here's the part most people miss. A chart full of trines can coast, because nothing ever forces the issue. The squares and oppositions are usually where the drive lives, the reason someone builds, pushes, and gets genuinely good at something. Soft aspects tend to be the talent. Hard aspects tend to be the ambition. The most compelling charts run on a mix of both.
How to read an aspect in your own chart
Reading an aspect comes down to two questions: which two planets, and how are they angled. Take the planets' jobs first. Venus runs love and money, Mars runs drive and desire. Put them in a square and you get someone whose wanting and whose loving keep colliding: strong attraction, real friction, a pull that makes relationships run hot. Put those same two in a trine and desire and affection move together with ease, charm that costs no effort.
Once you know the two planets and the angle between them, most aspects read in plain language. You do not need the whole glossary to start. You do need your exact birth time, though, because the faster-moving points change aspect by the hour.
