What is a conjunction in astrology?

A conjunction is the simplest aspect to picture: two planets parked at almost the same degree of the zodiac, close enough that they read as one point in the sky. Its glyph is a small circle with a short arm, and on a chart it sits between the two planets it ties together. Zero degrees of separation is the exact version, and the closer the two sit, the more completely they act as a unit.

Say your Sun sits at 12 degrees Gemini and your Mercury at 14 degrees Gemini. Those two are conjunct, and in practice your sense of self and the way your mind works are hard to pull apart. You think as who you are, quickly and out loud. Sun and Mercury conjunctions are among the most common in any chart, because Mercury never wanders more than about 28 degrees from the Sun to begin with.

Exact means zero degrees apart, but two planets rarely land on the very same minute. Astrologers allow an orb, a small cushion of a few degrees, and still call it a conjunction. Most keep it tight at around six to eight degrees, and stretch to eight or ten when the Sun or Moon is involved, since those two carry extra weight.

The size of that orb tells you how loud the conjunction runs. Two planets within a degree of each other are welded together, nearly impossible to separate. Give them six or seven degrees of room and they still blend, but each keeps a little space to breathe. When you read your own chart, check the tightest pairs first, because those are the ones doing the most work.

A conjunction does not soften two planets or set them against each other. It merges them. Neither one gets to operate on its own anymore. Whatever the first planet wants and whatever the second planet wants arrive in the same breath, aimed at the same target. That fusion is why a conjunction feels less like a conversation between two forces and more like a single, concentrated one.

A conjunction stays neutral until you name the two planets in it. Venus conjunct Jupiter is the one everybody wants: warmth, generosity, and a knack for landing in good rooms at the right moment, because two of the friendliest planets are pulling the same way. Moon conjunct Jupiter reads similarly open and hopeful.

Now fuse two planets that want opposite things. Mars conjunct Saturn puts your drive and your brakes in the same body, so effort meets resistance and progress feels like pushing uphill until you learn to pace it. Mars conjunct Pluto runs hotter still, an all-or-nothing intensity that can move mountains or burn you out. Same aspect, completely different experience, decided entirely by who is fused to whom.
