The 4th house

This is the base of your chart, and it governs the base of your life. Home comes first, in both senses: the actual place you live and the way you turn four walls into somewhere that feels like yours, plus the deeper sense of home you carry around inside you. Family sits right beside it, meaning the people who raised you, the household you grew up in, and everything you absorbed from them before you were old enough to decide what to keep. Your roots belong here too: where your people come from, the stories passed down the line, and the emotional weather of the rooms you grew up in.

The 4th also holds a parent, usually the one who shaped your sense of safety the most, and the private self you only let out at home. This is who you are with your shoes off and nobody to impress: the moods that never reach the group chat, the comfort routines, the specific way you come apart on a hard day and put yourself back together by morning. Everyone has a version of themselves that only the people they live with ever meet, and that version lives here.

Its cusp has a name of its own, the IC, short for imum coeli, the lowest point of your chart and the exact bottom of the wheel. It sits directly opposite the 10th house and the midheaven, which stand for your public life, reputation, and career. The whole axis fits in one line: the 10th is who the world sees, and the 4th is what you come home to. The Moon in the 4th is doubly at home, since the Moon already rules this house. Your moods rise and fall with the state of your home, you need a place that genuinely feels safe before you can function anywhere else, and family memories stay vivid in you for decades. Keeping a home that feels right is basic maintenance for you, the quiet thing that keeps everything else standing.

Saturn in the 4th often points to an early home that felt heavy, or a parent who was strict, absent, or carrying more than they could hold. The reward comes with time. You build your own foundation carefully, one brick at a time, and you frequently become the steady one that other people lean on later in life, the person whose door is always solid.

The Sun in the 4th roots your whole identity in home and family. You may be more private than people guess, doing your real living well away from the spotlight, and you often come into your full self later, once the home base you were always quietly working toward is finally there.

The sign crossing your IC sets the tone for what home has to feel like before you can settle into it. A Taurus IC wants comfort you can reach out and touch: good food, warm light, furniture that stays put for years. A Cancer IC, the sign most at home in this house, needs real emotional safety and tends to build a nest that runs on care, memory, and a full fridge. An Aquarius IC often ends up with a home nothing like the one it came from, chosen family over inherited rules, a base with plenty of room to breathe.

The planet that rules your IC sign, and the house it lands in, adds the next layer. It points to the part of your life your sense of home keeps threading through, and often to where the actual work of feeling settled gets done. Follow that planet and the story gets specific.

The most common worry about this house has the gentlest answer. There are only about ten planets to spread across twelve houses, so several houses sit empty in every chart ever drawn. An empty 4th says nothing against your family, your home life, or your ability to feel rooted somewhere. It is simply how the math works out.

In practice it means the home and family thread runs through other parts of your chart. Read the sign on your IC, find the planet that rules it, follow that planet to whatever house it lives in, and the 4th house themes show up there, fully intact. The story is never missing. It just changes address.
