What the houses add

Why the houses need your birth time
The houses are set by the rising sign, and the rising changes roughly every two hours. So the exact birth time is what decides which house each planet falls into. Without it, you have your planets and signs but not the where.
This is why a serious chart reading always asks for your time. The houses are half the story, and they are the half a birthday cannot reach.
Empty houses are completely normal
There are around ten planets and twelve houses, so several houses sit empty in every chart ever cast. An empty house is not a warning that the area is missing from your life.
It just means you read that house through the sign on its cusp and the planet that rules that sign, which lives somewhere else in your chart. The story is there; it is simply told from another room.

Which house is the most important?
None is universally most important; it depends on your chart and your question. That said, the first house (self), seventh (partnership), and tenth (career) come up constantly because they cover identity, relationships, and your public life.
What does an empty house mean?
Nothing ominous. With about ten planets across twelve houses, empty houses are guaranteed. You read an empty house through the sign on its cusp and that sign’s ruling planet, rather than a planet sitting inside it.
How are the houses different from the signs?
The signs are twelve styles of energy; the houses are twelve areas of life. A planet has a sign (how it behaves) and a house (where it behaves). You need both to read a placement fully.
Why do house systems disagree?
Astrologers use different methods (whole sign, Placidus, and others) to divide the wheel, so a planet can land in slightly different houses depending on the system. The signs and planets do not change; only the house lines shift.
